DRIVE BANK CONSIDERATIONS Drive battery banks have special considerations not normally associated with house or starting battery banks. They must give up much more power for hours at a time and potentially, depending on the use of the boat, be able to deal with a partial state of charge for weeks or months. Flooded lead acid batteries are normally not equal to this task. The Firefly AGM is the only battery we are aware of that can deal with a partial state of charge without sulphating up and developing a memory. All AGM batteries, however, suffer to a greater or lessr degree in that as the load increases, more power is lost to resistance. For example, the AGM Firefly is rated at 110 amp hours at 20 amps, but only 53 amp hours at 75 amps. Whereas the LiFePo4 batteries are 100 amp hours at 10 amps and 100 amp hours at 100 amps in addition to being 1/2 the weight. They are typically twice the cost.
